What is PeoplePC Mail?
PeoplePC is a paid email service formerly owned by Earthlink. USPS mailboxes were available, as well as many other services such as free anti-virus protection, $100 worth of hosting for no cost, and much more. PeoplePC was the first company to license Gizmo Project’s webcam technology back in 2001. The People PC main website is now offline but can still be accessed using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine here. Their website offered both free and paid memberships. For people, without any subscriptions, an error screen would appear when trying to access it normally via https://webmail.peoplepc.com/ which redirected to their general site that didn’t require a login or account button at all times for you to click. It was possible to bypass this using a well-placed bookmark in your browser. However, it is best if you have a webmail account with PeoplePC and are already logged in before clicking. After which you can access the site normally without needing to log in again (unless you log out).
PeoplePC no longer exists as a company but their webmail still does. And because of that, we will be analyzing this vulnerability here for educational purposes only.
Signing up for PeoplePC Mail
You can create an account for free by going to peoplespc.com’s mail login page.
Enter a username, password, and captcha as requested.
Click on the button that says “Create Account”. You will now be redirected to your PeoplePC mail inbox. If you log out, you will need to log in again in order to access your PeoplePC mail inbox from here onwards.
Do note that this is only a dummy account used solely for the purpose of testing and documentation provided with this post which allows a person or company with malicious intent who finds this post via Google, etc., could abuse these accounts if they have not logged in out yet. But most likely they would have already logged out because it has been several months since PeoplePC was shut down. Most likely they have most likely forgotten about this post and all the fake accounts that I have created in order to test my theory on looking into PeoplePC mail inboxes after they were shut down back in 2014.
In fact, if you attempted to logon right now using one of these fake accounts, you will get a message saying “This account has been disabled.” which indicates that PeoplePC had already disabled or deleted them when they were no longer able to provide service for them anymore back in 2014.
Managing an account in PeoplePC Mail
In order to use PeoplePC mail services, you will need a User ID and your Account PIN.
To get started, log in here then click the “My Subscription” button on the top right side of the page then select “Reactivate Your email” from the dropdown menu that appears. Then enter your User ID and Password for this fake account that I have created. Then it’ll ask you to re-enter your password again just to double-check it and finally hit the submit button.
The next step is adding a new contact by entering a valid email address or email address in the space provided, using comma(,) to separate each email address. To finish off simply answer either Yes or No receiving messages from outside contacts based on whether you would like to receive messages from them or not.
Once done, they will send a confirmation message to your fake account which you have just created and all that’s left is logging into the fake account then write an email to tedcruz.org asking about your opt-out preferences.
The benefits of PeoplePC Mail
PeoplePC mail provides privacy by displaying messages to friends, family, and colleagues as if they were sent from your email account rather than a website. Friends will know it’s you because the messages are being sent from your email address.
If you use PeoplePC Mail, spammers can’t tell that you are using a free webmail service. This means they can’t sell your email address or personal information to other spammers, who may then continue sending unwanted messages to your inbox or selling it for profit.
